Containership escapes pirates

Vessel too fast for gun-toting gang
The German containership Lübeck narrowly evaded a pirate attack in the Somali Basin, north-east of the Seychelles last week.

In the early hours of last Wednesday, the 33,695dwt vessel was attacked when pirates in small boats opened fire with automatic weapons.

However, the containership was reportedly travelling at 40 kph – too fast for the pirates to capture.

The Lübeck was on its way to Salalah when the attack took place. It sustained some bullet damage to the funnel and the crane in front of the ship’s bridge. No-one aboard was injured.

The east African shore belong to the most dangerous of the World. Ships are hijacked on a regular base. For that reason carriers implemented the Piracy Risk Surcharge (PRS) . (source IFW)
