Container fleet rises

New vessel deliveries should reach 1.28 Mteu in 2011 based on Alphaliner forecasts, of which 1 Mteu has already been delivered.
Delivery deferrals and slippage have only had a marginal impact on fleet growth this year, with only some 120,000 teu of vessel scheduled for delivery in 2011 pushed back to 2012.
The orderbook is heavily skewed toward large vessels. The biggest units, ships of above 10,000 teu, have all joined the Far East-Europe route. However, the cascading-out of smaller ships has reduced the impact of capacity growth on this route.
There is a growing trend to deploy ships of 7,000-10,000 teu on North-South routes, with the FE-Middle East and FE-South America sectors being the main recipients.((Alphaliner)
