What does Import duties mean?
A new vision for air cargo
The Global Air Cargo Advisory Group (GACAG) has created four task forces to tackle e-commerce, customs, security and sustainability issues. The GACAG is collaboration between the four main groups in the air cargo industry: the International Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations (FIATA) , the International Air Transport Association (IATA) , The International Air Cargo Association (TIACA) and the Global Shippers’ Forum (GSF).
The four organisations hope to establish a vision and strategy for the global air cargo supply chain while presenting joint industry positions to third-parties.
GACAG Chairman Michael Steen said: “We are getting down to business… to focus on the priority areas we first identified in March.
“Each GACAG member has committed high-level resources to these task forces, and we are confident this combined expertise, knowledge and talent will enable us to identify and develop ways to improve the air cargo supply chain for all participants.”
Frederic Leger, head of IATA’s cargo business process and standards, will lead the security task force, while former FIATA President Bill Gottlieb will manage the e-commerce initiatives.
A main focus for Leger’s task force will be helping countries develop supply chain guidelines, and Gottlieb’s e-commerce unit will endorse electronic track-and-trace and the issue of electronic air waybills for carriers or freight forwarders.
TIACA’s Senior Director of Government Affairs, Sue Presti will head-up GACAG’s customs and trade facilitation task force, and GSF Secretary General Chris Welsh will chair the sustainability task force.
Presti will focus on promoting the modernisation and automation of customs processes, in collaboration with the World Customs Organisation, while Welsh’s task force will concentrate on environmental issues, such as noise, carbon emissions and sustainable biofuels.
Steen said each task force would consult with experts and explore their subjects in great detail. Each group will then present their recommendations to the GACAG’s steering committee, which will act on them accordingly.(IFW)
