Coals to Newcastle and origami cranes to Japan

A Sutton Coldfield company is to air freight 1,000 origami paper cranes to the stricken Japanese town of Sendai. Embassy Freight Services (Midlands) is sending the cranes to schoolchildren in the city, the closest to the earthquake which struck Japan earlier this year. In Japanese culture, the cranes symbolise holy or mystical creatures. They were made by visitors to East Gloucester Tennis Club in Cheltenham at a Japanese culture day, organised by tennis club member, Keiko Hirano. She said: “It is hoped that this symbol of the cranes will show them that they aren't forgotten.
