Paranaguá Port - Container traffic exceeds 2010 target
Amount of 954 thousand TEUs results exceeded previous years. The Port of Itajai surpassed the expectation of handling containers for the year 2010, accounting for a volume of 954.38 thousand TEUs (equivalent unit to a 20-foot container). The amount exceeds by little more than 154 thousand TEUs to initially target the complex to 800,000 TEUs.
The flow of containers full of imports showed a growth rate of 98.26%, while the unloading of empty containers rose by 14.63%. Regarding exports, the complex increased by 50.23% to full container handling traffic and 117.38% of empty containers, compared to the year 2009.
According to the commercial director of the Port of Itajai, Robert Grantham, the 2010 numbers were also higher than those measured in previous years. "The result represents an increase of 61% compared to 2009, 37.6% above the previous record set in 2008, 9.8 million tons," considers the executive.
Between terminals that operate the containerized cargo, the emphasis is on APM Terminals Itajai, who obtained an increase of 96% compared to 2009, having moved 384.95 thousand TEUs in 2010. Portonave - Port Terminals Mariners, in turn, moved 566,960 in the period, growing 44% compared to the range for 2009.
Superintendent Antonio dos Santos Junior Ayres notes that the performance of the complex has been noted by international bodies related to maritime industry. "The extraordinary growth of the movement was recorded by the British consultancy Drewry's, which placed the Complexo do Itajai port as the second planet in growth in cargo handling, based on results for the period January-September 2010," says the executive, adding that with the results, Itajaí overcame the trauma of the flood of 2008 and resumed the path of growth.
