Scrubber will help Containerships clean up its act
New technology will give shipping line a clear lead in going-green stakes Finland-based carrier Containerships is to adopt the new “scrubber technology”, aimed at reducing sulphur emissions from vessels.
The carrier has signed a contract with Finnish company Wärtsilä to install the technology on Containerships VII and be operational during the last quarter of this year.
Wärtsilä’s scrubber technology will place Containerships in in the vanguard of matching emission requirements in Europe’s sulphur emission control areas (SECA).
Marpol regulations stipulate that all vessels currently operating in the Baltic Sea and North Sea have to use fuels with a sulphur content not exceeding 1% per mass, and by 1 January, 2015 vessels must use fuels with a sulphur content not exceeding 0.1%.
The scrubber technology will allow Containerships VII to meet the 2015 regulations this year.
Wärtsilä is the first manufacturer to have been awarded a Marine?Scrubber Certificate by marine classification societies Det Norske Veritas and Germanischer Lloyd.
The technology consists of a scrubbing unit, including control and monitoring systems, and ancillary equipment which cleans the exhaust gas from the vessel’s main engine. Scrubbers reduce exhaust gas emissions such as sulphur oxides and particulates, and nitrogen oxides.
The system works with fresh water in a closed-loop system, in which sulphur oxides are neutralised with caustic soda. A small amount of scrubbing water is constantly extracted and fed into treatment units where the contaminants are removed and pumped into the vessel’s sludge tank.
Contaminants are disposed of at reception facilities in port, while clean effluents can be discharged overboard, in accordance with IMO rules. The scrubber can also be operated so that clean effluents are fed into a holding tank. Sigurjon Markusson, CEO Containerships, said: “The Wärtsilä fresh water scrubber technology will meet both environmental and commercial requirements for our operations.” (source: IFW)
