Santos Brasil: Container handling breaks record

Total TEUs on the three terminals of the company has 45% increase.

The Brazil Santos Participacoes SA had a 45% increase in the volume of containers handled in the company's three port terminals - Tecon Santos, Tecon Imbituba Tecon and Vila do Conde. 276 339 were operated equipment from January to September this year, with 78% of full containers - a record for the company. For the year, the volume reached 664,585 units operated, up 28.4% over the same period in 2009, an increase of 32.4% of full containers.

Tecon Santos hit record high in a single month, bringing the total to 91,678 containers moved in September. In the third quarter of 2010, the facility operated 264,447 containers, up from 215,022 containers in the same period in 2008. Since May 2010, the terminal has disposed of monthly volumes above the monthly average in 2008, before the crisis to promote international cargo flow reduction and fall of the drive. Were also recorded quarterly growth in Tecon Imbituba (22.6%) and Tecon Vila do Conde (64.7%).

According to Chief Financial Officer and Investor Relations of Brazil Santos, Washington Kato, the record growth of port operations of the company consolidates the resumption of the volumes started in 2009 and exceeds the levels of the third quarter of 2008. "The rebound in export full containers rose 32% over the second quarter of 2010, while imports remained strong," said Kato. The total number of containers stored in the port terminals operated by Santos Brazil (Santos, Imbituba and Vila do Conde) in the third quarter of 2010 reached 45,991, an increase of 56.7% over the same period of 2009.

From July to September 2010, the operation of customs warehousing, Santos Brazil Logistics posted volume of 19,848 containers stored, up 53% as compared to the third quarter of 2009 and 36% higher than in the second quarter of 2010.

Vehicle Terminal (VTE) also obtained the largest movement in the period with growth of 79.7% and greater involvement of heavy vehicles exported to the detriment of light vehicles. In the first nine months of 2010, the VTE increased by 83.6% in volume of vehicles moved.
