Sri Lanka: New port to open in weeks

The Sri Lankan port of Hambantota will be next month, according to a senior port official.

Agil Hewageegana, Chief Engineer of the port project, said work on the first phase was ahead of schedule.

"Fenders have been fixed and the final touches are being put to complete the first phase of the port, " Hewageegana told Sri Lankan media.

The first phase of the port includes a bunker berth, but the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) has yet to give details of how bunkering operations will be organised.

However, Hambantota's bunker sector will be closed to foreign investors.
