Westports on track to yearly target

Port Kelang: Westports Malaysia is on track to hit 5.5 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) this year based on the first nine months of volume growth.
The latest third quarter volume saw 4% growth year-on-year to 1.5 million TEUs.
Chief executive officer Ruben Emir Gnanalingam said in a statement that from January to September, the port handled 4.1 million TEUs giving a strong indication that it was on track to achieve this year’s target.
Westports handled about 4.5 million TEUs last year.
“With regard to future development, Westports has committed RM300mil into expansion works.
“We have commenced work on container terminal 6 which comprises an additional 300m berth, additional 1,500 ground slots of yard space and four new quay cranes. It is expected to be ready by the second quarter of next year and will boost our current capacity to 7.5 million TEUs.
“Currently, more mega-sized vessels (12,000 TEUs and above) have started calling at the port, ” he said.
