Indian government approves $800m project for 2017

The Indian Cabinet Committee on Infrastructure has approved construction of a US$827 million mega-container terminal at Chennai Port as a public-private partnership.

The project is expected to boost exports and imports in the region and will have a capacity of 4 million teu a year.

It will be able to handle the largest container vessels, enabling it to compete with other international ports, reducing the need for transhipment at Singapore and Colombo.

The first phase of the project will be completed by 2013 and the full terminal will be completed by 2017. (source: IFW)
