Freight cargo at Schiphol Airport raises by 20%

The Schiphol Group has handled 22% more cargo the first half of 2010 compared to 2009. For the first time the monthly cargovolume (July) was above the level before the economic crisis. The net profit of the airport trippled to 69,2 million. The grand turnover of Schiphol Airport decreased by 1,5% to 545 million.

The net results were influenced negatively by the closures of the airspace in April and May 2010 due to the ash clouds from Iceland. The ash clouds costs Schiphol Airport appr 12 million revenues. Despite the growth of cargo volume and number of passengers the division Aviation lost 1,8 million euro's the past 6 months. Schiphol credits this negative result to 'frozen' rates, high security costs and the ash cloud.

Schiphol Group's CEO Jos Nijhuis wants to start a discussion with customers 'how to bend this loss into a positive efficiency' on short notice. 'The rate structure of the port fees has to support the development of our mainport.'(source: NT)
