Santos Port – Codesp revises upward movement expected
The Codesp, state that administers the Port of Santos, has revised upwards the expected movement this year, which should exceed 93 million tonnes. If confirmed, the result will represent a 12% increase over 2009, when Santos leaked just over 83.1 million tons. Having answered by a flow equivalent to $ 42.9 billion, the port retains the participation of nearly one fourth of the Brazilian trade balance. The positive projection for the year is the result of the good first half performance, which showed a record for the period. Yesterday, day 27, the state said it was handled 44.8 million tons in the period between January and June - an increase of 16.6% over the established last year.
The increase in imports of 49.6% to 14.6 million tonnes, contributed to the result. But the jump was smaller percentage of exports: from 5.3% to 30.1 million tons.
The handling of containers increased by 17%, totaling 1.2 million TEUs (equivalent to one unit of equipment 20 feet), a level similar to 2008.
The load that stood out was the export again, sugar, an increase of 12.6% to 7.8 million tonnes. Shipments of soybeans rose 8.9% to 7.3 million tonnes. On import, coal recorded an increase of 63.6%, totaling 1.7 million tons. The movement of vehicles totaled 160,900 units, an increase of 85.1% over the first half of 2009.
Despite the increases, the number of ships moored in Santos dropped 2.1% over the same period last year, which, according to Codesp, denotes the effect of maintaining the complex depths of Santos.
The main origins of the goods which arrived at Port of Santos in the first half were the U.S. (25.6% of total imports), Argentina (8.6%), China (8.1%), Germany (4.4 %), and Australia (3.8%).
The destinations of goods exported from Santos were mainly to China (24.1%), Netherlands (7.0%), Russia (4.6%), United States (4.2%) and India ( 3.8%).
