JAL speaks out for lighter price-fixing fine
Japan Airlines (JAL) has agreed to a US$12 million settlement for price-fixing cargo surcharges in and to the US.Legal firm Kaplan Fox & Kilsheimer announced the deal 21 July, being one of four co-lead counsels representing direct purchasers of cargo shipment.
The settlement is low. In September, 2009, Lufthansa, Lufthansa cargo and Swiss International Air Lines were all fined $85 million as part of an allegedly similar cartel. JAL has been let off comparatively lightly by agreeing to provide information for the prosecution against the other defendants.
JAL is still in bankruptcy protection following its spectacular collapse earlier in the year.
