Port complex sets record for moving vehicles

The Port of Rio Grande had record movement of vehicles during the first five months of this year. The port complex handled, from January to May this year, 28 896 vehicles. The highest recorded to date was obtained in 2008, when 28,378 vehicles were operated.

Compared to the same period last year, the movement grew 54.2%, while imports accounted for 96.4% of the total. 27 869 vehicles were unloaded, up 65% compared to the previous year.

Exports remain low, dropping 44.3% over the same period of 2009. The largest reduction was in the operations of tractors, which had decreased by 53.6%, totaling 630 units. The same trend was followed by exports of harvesters, which closed the first five months of the year low of 21.4% - 308 computing units.

However, shipments of buses rose by 326.3%, total exports of 81 units, compared to 19 last year. This increase is due to shipments to South Africa where the vehicles are being used to transport the delegations during the World Cup. (source: Brazil)
